A demographic image audit enables you to understand the composition of the people depicted in the images on your website.

Your audit report will include summarized data about the race and sex of the people in the images on your website. For example, what percentage of the people depicted on your site present as Asian, or as Female?

Manual audits are wonderful, but they can be costly, time consuming and prone to human error. An audit from Veridue leverages advanced technology to automate the audit process. This enables the audit to be completed fast, and for a lower cost, while also maintaining consistency.

When the audit is complete, your will receive a PDF of the audit report. The report provides an overview of the demographic details of the faces detected in the analyzed images.

Method

01 — Your website is crawled

The first step in the audit process is to analyze your website with a specialized web-crawling engine. The crawl engine will discover every public page on your site and index each of the images on the page. The crawl will also look for the publish date of the page if it is available. If you purchase a Professional or Custom package, you can specify areas of your site to either be included or excluded from the crawl.

02 — Extract images

Indexed images are sorted and filtered. When possible, the most recent images are analyzed first, but this can be modified in the Professional and Custom packages. Images with file types that can’t be analyzed are excluded. The total number of images selected for analysis will vary depending on the package you select.

03 — Detect faces

Advanced computer vision and machine learning technology is used to determine if each image has a human face in it or not. Images with faces are tagged for demographic analysis.

04 — Analyze faces

Each detected face is processed using ethical machine learning to estimate it’s race and sex. Estimation of race and sex is based on subtle physical attributes and may or may not correspond to an individual's ethnic or gender identity.

05 — Report

A professional report in PDF format is produced and delivered to you. The report will include information like:

  • How many images were found and how many had faces

  • What percentage of faces were estimated to be of each race

  • Percentage of faces estimated to be male or female

  • Demographic break down (percent of faces that are estimated to be Black Male, Asian Female, etc)

  • Sample of images from your website depicting the analysis results

  • Most audits are completed in 2-5 days. If it looks like it will take longer than that, we’ll get in touch with you.

  • We are able to analyze JPG, PNG and BMP images.

  • We have high confidence in the accuracy of facial detection, which is generally above 99%. We don’t provide accuracy numbers for estimations of race or sex. Our process may pick up on subtle features that an individual may or may not observe. We provide sample images from your site in your audit report so that you may asses the accuracy of the process.
